Is starting a healthy morning routine among your 2024 goals?

Welcome. You’ve arrived at the right place.

In this blog post, we’ll cover how to create a healthy morning routine so that you can show up as your best self and feel better not only physically, but also mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

But first, I’m Benan – a Holistic Wellness Coach who is empowering busy professionals to implement healthy Nutrition, Lifestyle, and Mindset habits and boost their confidence by connecting them to their authentic self. It’s important to mention that I wasn’t feeling my best self all the time. There was a point in life when I didn’t want to leave my bed and kept snoozing my alarm clock. Mentally drained, I couldn’t find fulfillment. I broke that cycle with starting a healthy morning routine.

Hence this blog post! Today we’ll be breaking down the science behind a healthy morning routine, what it is, what it’s not, and how to implement it.

Ready? Set. Go!

What is a Healthy Morning Routine?

A healthy morning routine is a set of positive habits and activities you do regularly after waking up to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It typically includes actions like waking up early, exercising, eating a nutritious breakfast, practicing mindfulness, and planning your day. The goal is to start your day on a positive note, setting the tone for better overall health and productivity.

What Happens When You Don’t Have a Healthy Morning Routine?

There was a time when I wasn’t an early riser. If I had to be at work by 9 am, I was getting up at 8:20 and rushing to the office. The repercussions were real, and they manifested in various aspects of my well-being:

The Realities I Faced

  • Low Energy and Mood Swings: Skipping proper breakfast took a toll on my energy levels, leading to mood swings.
  • High Stress: An aggressive daily schedule heightened stress levels, impacting my overall mental health.
  • Less Physical Activity: Balancing work and personal priorities after hours left little room for physical activity.
  • Impaired Decision Making: The lack of focus due to erratic mornings hindered my decision-making abilities.
  • Unwanted Weight Gain: Compensating for low energy with caffeine and sugar contributed to unwanted weight gain.

The Turning Point

As a former athlete, witnessing the deterioration of both my health and work performance was a painful experience. The moment I realized I had enough of this, I decided to change my lifestyle. It was not easy, yet I can assure you, it’s 100% worth it!

3 Steps That Helped Me to Start a Healthy Morning Routine

1) Identifying my purpose

Identifying my purpose in life significantly contributed to a healthy morning routine and overall well-being. When you have a clear sense of purpose, it provides motivation and direction to your actions. Knowing why I wake up each day gives my morning routine a meaningful foundation. It helps me prioritize tasks that align with my goals and values, fostering a sense of fulfillment. This clarity reduces morning indecision and stress, allowing for a more intentional and positive start to the day. A purpose-driven morning routine not only enhances my well-being but also sets the tone for a more satisfying and purposeful life.

2) Defining my values

Defining my values played a crucial role in cultivating a healthy morning routine and enhancing overall well-being. When I took the Values Assessment in 2019, it provided a clear compass for decision-making and goal-setting. This clarity extends to my morning routine, guiding me to incorporate activities and habits aligned with my values. Whether it’s dedicating time for self-care, pursuing meaningful goals, or fostering positive relationships, a values-driven morning routine instills a sense of purpose and fulfillment. By aligning my actions with my values, I created a foundation for a more balanced and rewarding lifestyle that positively influences my overall well-being.

3) prioritizing my sleep

Sleep is one of the most underestimated healing tools. After adjusting my sleep times with my Circadian Rhythm had a huge impact on my well-being. By ensuring I get sufficient and quality sleep, I set the foundation for improved physical and mental health. A well-rested night allows me to wake up feeling refreshed and energized, enhancing my ability to tackle the day ahead. It promotes better focus, mood stability, and decision-making. Consistently prioritizing sleep not only contributes to a smoother morning routine but also positively influences my overall quality of life, supporting both physical and mental resilience.

A Peek Into My Current Lifestyle

My current routine is a testament to the positive impact of these changes:

  • 10:00 PM: Bed Time
  • 5:40 AM: Wake Up
  • 6:00 AM: Meditation
  • 6:15 AM: Yoga
  • 6:45 AM: Shower
  • 7:00 AM: Breakfast
  • 7:45 AM: Plan My Day
  • 8:00 AM: Work

The Cornerstone of Well-Being and Leadership

Embraced in my daily life, this early morning routine serves as the cornerstone of my healthy lifestyle. In a world where we all share the same 24 hours, prioritizing this routine has uniquely equipped me to better serve others.

For a leader, the commitment to consistently present the best self transcends occasional efforts; it’s a daily necessity. This deliberate morning regimen proves transformative, not just uplifting personal well-being but also empowering me to fulfill my purpose of serving others more effectively. From a leadership perspective, the impact of this routine goes beyond individual benefits, fostering a holistic approach to well-being. It distinctly influences the way I contribute to the overall well-being of those around me.
